The rivalry between India and Pakistan is one of the biggest in cricketing history. There will be critics who would argue that there is nothing bigger than the Ashes. However, there is nothing which can bring more passion into the game than an India Pakistan tie. Due to the prevalent political tension between the two countries, the neighbouring countries haven’t played a lot of bilateral cricket against each other since the 26/11 terror attacks.
However, there was a time when both the teams met each other quite often in Test and ODI cricket. The rivalries of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag with speedsters like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar kept the audiences at the edge of their seats. Players from both sides have great mutual respect for each other. The two teams have also been involved in a few funny incidents.
Sehwag recalled one such incident that happened during a Test match in Bengaluru during Vikram Sathaye’s web show What the Duck along with the Master himself, Sachin Tendulkar. Viru revealed an incident where the bowler Danish Kaneria was totally unaware of what was happening at the other end.
“I think we were playing a Test match in Bangalore and I was in good form in that series. I made 201 in the first innings and Inzamam-Ul-Haq was standing in the slips and Kamran Akmal was the wicketkeeper. The batting went on for long, so they had a long off, long on, deep mid-wicket in place for Danish Kaneria and he was bowling at my pads.”

Sehwag’s conversation with Inzamam
“So, I asked Inzi Bhai, ‘Call long on up’. He asked ‘Why?’ So, I said ‘I want to hit a six.’ So he laughed and said ‘You’re kidding.’ I said ‘No, I’m not kidding. Bring him up for one ball and if I don’t hit a six, send him back.’ So he called the long on to mid on and Kaneria bowled and I hit a six and then he sent him back. So Kaneria was angry and was like ‘Why did you call him ahead?’ He replied, ‘You just bowl.’ He didn’t know the story, so such incidents happened with Inzamam,” Sehwag said as Tendulkar and host of the show Sathaye kept laughing.
Sehwag further went on to add that Inzamam was like an elder brother to him and it was like a brotherly gesture of allowing a younger brother to hit a six. “I had a brotherly relation with him,” Sehwag said. The Test took place way back in 2005 when Pakistan had toured India. Pakistan scored a mammoth 570 runs in the 1st innings.
India was bowled out for 449 in the 1st innings with Sehwag being the top scorer with 201. India was asked to chase 383 runs in the 2nd essay. They faltered quite badly and were bowled out for 214, thus handing Pakistan a 168 runs victory. Eventually, the series ended at 1-1.
