Yuvraj Singh has come down hard on the Indian team-management in the wake of India’s World Cup exit. India’s journey in the tournament ended with a shock 18-run defeat to New Zealand in the semifinal. After finishing the group stage at the top of the points table, India were the favourites to win the clash.

The Men in Blue looked well on their way to the final when they came up with a fine bowling display to restrict New Zealand to a modest 139 for 8. However, India were in for a big surprise as New Zealand came out all guns blazing with the ball. They reduced the Men in Blue to 5 for 3 and then 92 for 6 to effectively kill the game.

Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni then waged a heroic battle to bring back India back into contention. The two added 116 runs and scored fighting fifties but failed to take the side over the line. India were eventually all out for 221. Yuvraj Singh has criticised the team-management for their failure to find a solid number four batsman. Citing the example of the 2003 World Cup, the World Cup-winning star criticised the current management for not backing the players.

“The team management should have groomed someone. If someone was failing at No. 4, the team management should have told that player that he was going to play the World Cup. Like in 2003 World Cup, we were playing New Zealand before the tournament, everybody was failing. But the same team played in the World Cup,” Yuvraj Singh told The Times of India.

India had pinned their hopes on Ambati Rayudu after recalling him last year. However, they dropped the right-handed batsman at the last moment and named Vijay Shankar in the squad. Shankar had made his ODI debut in January this year.
