One of the greatest fielders ever to play for India, Mohammad Kaif after playing at the top level cricket, for nearly two decades finally decided to call it quits from all forms of cricket.

Kaif announced his retirement on 13th July that has a huge significance in the history of Indian cricket and also in the life of Kaif in particular.

It was on this very day, 16 years ago that an inspiring performance from him and Yuvraj Singh saw India win the NatWest Trophy final under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly.

Kaif and Yuvraj shared a terrific partnership after Indian team was reduced to 146 for five. They were chasing a huge target of 326 and eventually being in trouble. They had lost all of their main batters and it was almost a lost battle for them.

However, Yuvraj and Kaif had some other ideas. They started batting quite brilliantly and kept smashing the boundaries on a consistent basis.

They shared a match-winning 123-run stand before Yuvraj was dismissed after making 69 off 61 deliveries.

Kaif kept going and shared another important partnership with Harbhajan Singh. Kaif eventually saw India home from the other end in the final over of Andrew Flintoff. It was a historic victory for India and there was simply no doubt about the fact.

Yuvraj’s message for Kaif:

Yuvraj congratulated his former teammate and his close friend Kaif as the latter decided to retire from all forms of cricket.

“Well done kaifi U shd be proud of ur efforts & commitments u showed in ur career. One of the best finisher & fielder Indian cricket produced after me tho very proud to have played alongside u especially the NatWest’02 finals which a true Indian fan dearly cherishes @MohammadKaif,” Yuvraj wrote.
