BCCI announced the Indian squad for the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka in July. AS many as six new inclusions have been made into the 25-member squad. Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Krishnappa Gowtham, Chetan Sakariya, Varun Chakravarthy, and Nitish Rana are the players who have been rewarded due to their domestic performance.

A total of six games (3 ODIs. 3 T20Is) will be played between July 13 to July 28. All the matches will be played at Colombo’s Premadasa stadium in empty stadiums, Shikhar Dhawan will lead the Indian contingent in the series while Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been assigned as his deputy.

In this article, we take a look at the players who did deserve a spot in the Indian squad for SL tour.

With enough spin options in the Indian squad, Krishnappa Gowtham‘s selection is a matter of debate. The team will field two or a maximum of three spin options in the playing XI judging by the conditions in Sri Lanka. With Yuzvendra Chahal and Krunal Pandya being almost guaranteed selections, Gowtham’s selection ahead of Kuldeep Yadav or Varun Chakravarty will always be questionable.

Thus it will be really interesting to see how does the BCCI uses him and the other players in the six games given the number of options that the board has at their disposal.

Roped in by Chennai Super Kings for 9.25 crores he did not get a chance to make his debut for the side in the first half of IPL 2021. It will be interesting to see if he gets a game in the UAE leg.

Varun Chakravarty was first named in the Indian squad for the England series. However, he failed the Yo-Yo Test and thus did not get a chance to make his international debut. He picked up seven wickets in IPL 2021 which has again paved his path for a comeback.

However, given the fielding standards he sets for himself and his abilities as a batsman, he should not have found a place in the squad that was announced for the Sri Lanka series. The BCCI has enough options to cover up for his mystery spin.

The Karnataka batsman Manish Pandey has made the cut in the squad. One assumes that the absence of the regular players in the squad has allowed him to get his chance. He has not been in good form in domestic cricket or the IPL off late.

His inconsistency is one of the prime reasons why he was not included in the playing XI in the presence of the regulars. Pandey has played 26 ODIs and 39 T20Is for Team India but is yet to play an innings of note. However, his fielding is a big asset for the Indian national cricket team.
