Winning the toss could prove to be a big advantage for any player as a captain and is especially the test format where the touring teams cannot afford to be on the backseat any time However, there is not any particular technique followed to win a toss and it all depends upon basically the lack associated with the captain.

Toss can be crucial when you already the conditions of the wicket suits more towards the bowling side in the first innings and also in Indian conditions where the fifth day is going to be a nightmare for the last batting side. Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi was regarded as one of India’s finest cricketers from the 1970s generation and he played from the period of 1961 to 1975 for almost 14 years.  Pataudi scored 2793 runs in 46 Tests at an average of 34.9 and he scored six centuries and 16 half-centuries in his Test career.

Pataudi captained India in 40 tests and he had lost 50 percent of the tosses, which is 20 times. He is fifth in the list of Indian captains who have lost the most number of tosses, and his captaincy numbers weren’t that good either.

Sunil Gavaskar was popularly called the “little master” as he had a staggering career for India in tests while opening the innings. He was the first-ever cricketer to cross 10,000 runs in the longest format of the game and he is one of the greatest test openers ever.

Gavaskar captained India in 47 tests, and out of it, he had lost the toss on 25 occasions which is the fourth most number of tosses lost by an Indian captain in tests. He is currently working as a commentator for the ongoing India-England test series.

Sourav Ganguly had an excellent stint as the captain of India and he had the attitude to take down any opponent in their own shed. Ganguly was one of the most elegant left-handers in the game and he had the gift of timing too. He was very successful as a batsman and as a captain conquering various nations.

Ganguly captained India in 49 tests and out of it, he lost the toss 28 times which is the third most number of toss losses by an Indian test captain. Ganguly is currently working as the President of BCCI post his retirement.

MS Dhoni was known to be one of the all-time best white-ball finishers and he had the ability to hit sixes for any delivery as he was strongly built. He did have a successful test career as well and he had the technique to withstand in the longer format. Dhoni is the best wicketkeeper-batsman India has had in all formats.

Dhoni captained India in 60 tests and out of it, Dhoni had lost the toss 34 times which is the second most number of toss losses by an Indian captain in tests. Post his retirement from international cricket, Dhoni is still playing IPL for the Chennai Super Kings as the skipper of the franchise.

Virat Kohli holds the record for the most number of toss losses by an Indian test captain and he moved to the top of the list after recently losing the toss to Joe Root in the ongoing first Test against England. Kohli has captained India in 62 tests and out of it, he has lost the toss 35 times.

Kohli is the best batsman in the modern-day generation taking all formats into account and he averages more than 50 in all the formats. He is also the most successful Indian captain ever in test history and he still has a long way to go.
