They began their Super 12 campaign with a win against Bangladesh, however, it was followed by two defeats.

Sri Lanka are coming into the contest on the back of a 4-wicket defeat against South Africa. Shanaka and Co. posted 142 runs in the first innings but failed to defend it. South Africa chased down the score in 19.5 overs. For them to reach the semi-final, Sri Lanka need to win both the remaining matches and would also want some other results to go their way. Here’s a look at our predicted playing XI of Sri Lanka against England.

ENG vs SL: Sri Lanka’s (SL) Predicted Playing XI Against England (ENG) – ICC T20 World Cup 2021, Match 29

Openers: Prathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera

Prathum Nissanka waged a lone battle in the last game against South Africa. Despite the fact that wickets kept falling at regular intervals, Nissanka kept going at the other end. He went on to score 72 runs off 58 deliveries, including 6 fours and 3 sixes.

He will be partnering with Kusal Perera. The latter has shown flashes of brilliance but hasn’t been able to convert the starts into big scores. For Sri Lanka to win the game, he needs to step and set the foundation with a solid knock at the top.

Middle-Order: Charith Asalanka, B Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando

There is no denying that Charith Asalanka has been the standout batsman for Sri Lanka in the tournament. He has played some sensational knocks and would be wanting to hit another one on Monday. He, unfortunately, got run out in the last game after scoring 21 off 14 deliveries.

Avishka Fernando’s poor form has been one of the biggest reasons behind Sri Lanka’s downfall in the super 12 stage. Fernando came into the tournament on the back of telling performances in the last couple of series. However, he hasn’t been able to replicate them in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.

All-rounders: Wanindu Hasaranga, Dasun Shanaka, Karunaratne

Wanindu Hasaranga’s contribution is invaluable to the side. He was responsible for turning the last game in the favor of his team by picking a hat-trick. He finished his figures with 3 for 20 in 4 overs.

Skipper, Shanaka hasn’t really contributed much with the bat. The team would want him to come good in a must-win game on Monday. Chamika Karunaratne has been effective with the ball. He hasn’t picked a lot of wickets but has managed to put pressure by bowling a lot of dot balls. Expect him to retain his place in the side.

Bowlers: M Theekshana, Lahiru Kumara, D Chameera

D Chameera bowled a sensational spell in the last game. He removed both the openers inside the powerplay and finished his spell with 2 for 27 in 4 overs.

Lahiru Kumara has been pretty effective for Sri Lanka in the tournament. Though, he has leaked a lot of runs in the death overs. Kumara couldn’t hold his nerves and defend 15 runs off the final over against South Africa on Monday. He should forget the memories of that spell and make a new start. Mystery spinner, M Theekshana should complete the playing XI.
