Namibia sealed their place in the Super 12 of the ongoing T20 World Cup after defeating Ireland by 8 wickets on Friday. This victory has come after they were blown away by Sri Lanka in their first match, but returned stronger with a 6-wicket win over Netherlands.

All-rounder David Wiese starred in both victories for Namibia. Chasing 126 in Sharjah against Ireland, Wiese hammered 28 runs off 14 balls to avoid any hiccup in the run-chase, after he had picked a brace with the ball. Captain Gerhard Erasmus remained unbeaten on 53 to steer his side home.

A couple of days ago in Abu Dhabi, versus Netherlands, the lanky all-rounder smashed 66 runs off 40, in an innings laced with 4 fours and 5 sixes, to carry his side over the line in chase of 165.

These two victories, after the loss in their tournament opener to Sri Lanka, have ensured that Namibia go through to the next round, Super 12. The result of the Sri Lanka-Netherlands game later in the evening will decide which group in the Super 12 will Namibia join. Sri Lanka have won both their matches and have already confirmed their spot in the next round.

David Wiese, Player of the Match, said: “It’s completely overwhelming. I didn’t think I would get this award after the way Erasmus’ batted. It was a proper captain’s innings. I’m accepting this but I think it belongs to him. Lot of hard work has gone into this from the boys. There were a few minor blips but overall, it was a strong performance.”
