Namibia opened their account in the Super 12 with a 4-wicket win over Scotland in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday in a low-scoring encounter.
Chasing a lowly target of 110, Namibia had a quiet start scoring 16 runs in the first four overs before Michael van Lingen stroked two boundaries off Josh Davey but was dismissed soon by Safyaan Sharif. Namibia ended the powerplay at 29/1.
After a couple of tight overs, Craig Williams broke free launching Mark Watt for a maximum but Zane Green perished trying the same to Chris Greaves. Scotland stormed back in the game with wickets of Gerhard Erasmus, accounted by Michael Leask, and Craig Williams, stumped off the bowling of Watt.
As the required neared 6 runs per over, JJ Smit opened his muscles to thump a boundary to Sharif and then wallop a maximum to Greaves.
David Wiese whacked a big one to Leask before getting out to the same bowler. JJ Smit (32* off 23 balls) though saw his side over the line with 5 balls to spare.
Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Namibia got a dream start from Ruben Trumpelmann, who took three wickets in the first over. The left-arm pacer bowled George Munsey on the first ball of the match, had Calum MacLeod edging to the wicket-keeper on the third ball, before trapping Scotland’s stand-in captain Richie Berrington lbw out on the fourth.
David Wiese then dismissed Craig Wallace lbw in the sixth over as Namibia were left reeling at 22/4 by the end of the powerplay.
There was just one boundary scored in the next four overs as Matthew Cross and Michael Leask halted the fall of wickets taking Scotland to 43/4 at the mid-innings mark. Leask then broke his shackles with a four and a six off Michael van Lingen before Jan Frylinck castled Cross at the other end.
Leask was joined by Chris Greaves and both struck regular boundaries while also rotating the strike, before Leask was bowled by JJ Smit for 44 runs off 27 balls. Namibia followed up with tidy overs towards the end as Scotland managed 109.

Namibia – a country of 2.5m people – have leapfrogged India and New Zealand in Group 2 of the Super 12s. Even if that turns out to be their last win of the tournament, it's been a remarkable story
