The Australian cricket team began their campaign with a shaky 5-wicket win over South Africa in the opening match of the SuperCup 12 stage in Abu Dhabi. Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade held their nerve to take the Aussies home in the final over.

Chasing an under-par target of 119, Australia made a meal out of it. Skipper Aaron Finch was dismissed for a duck early on and Mitchell Marsh also fell without doing much. David Warner seemed to have found his mojo with three boundaries but fell soon after.

Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell then began the reconstruction of the innings albeit at a slow pace. They struggled to get the spinners away, as has been the case in UAE for the last few months. Nevertheless, the scoreboard kept ticking but both set batsmen fell in a matter of a few deliveries.

Stoinis and Wade then built an unbeaten 40-run partnership which turned out to be matchwinning. Stoinis finished the game off with a boundary off Dwaine Pretorius to seal the victory and claim two points from the game.

Earlier, a sorry performance with the bat from the South Africans saw them huff and puff their way 118/9. Aiden Markram top-scored for the Proteas with a 36-ball 40 but that was the only highlight in the innings. The rest of them were done in by some good bowling from the Aussies coupled with poor strokeplay.
