T20 World Cup 2021: Twitter Reacts As West Indies Are Knocked Out Of the Tournament By Sri Lanka

The defending champions West Indies became the third team to be officially knocked out of the ongoing T20 World Cup after they were handed a thrashing by an inspired Sri Lankan performance in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
Opting to bowl first, the Windies couldn’t come up with the goods against a wonderful batting performance from the Lankans. Kusal Perera was the aggressor in the opening partnership until he was dismissed by Dwayne Bravo. Soon after, the match-winning partnership began to form.
Knowing a loss in the match would push them out of the tournament, the pressure was completely on the West Indian team. And it showed when they began the run-chase, losing both Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis inside the first two overs. A promotion for Nicholas Pooran seemed to have worked as he scored at a brisk pace.

His partnership with Shimron Hetmyer was the only silver lining in an otherwise disappointing batting performance from the West Indies. It pretty much summed up their tournament which has been miserable, to say the least. Eventually, they were restricted to 169, losing the match by 20 runs.
The Lankans were already out and they were playing for pride. The result of the game will not make a difference in the points table, with England, Australia, and South Africa continuing to occupy the top three slots.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the defending champions West Indies being knocked out:
What an outstanding performance #<!---->T<!---->2<!---->0<!---->W<!---->o<!---->r<!---->l<!---->d<!---->C<!---->u<!---->p #<!---->S<!---->L<!---->v<!---->W<!---->I The planning and execution with bat and ball was brilliant especially the matchups used with specific bowlers to specific batsman.. tactically tops @<!---->O<!---->f<!---->f<!---->i<!---->c<!---->i<!---->a<!---->l<!---->S<!---->L<!---->C Extremely proud of the team . End of an incredible era for the West Indies in T20.
The emphasis on sixes over minimising dots; redefining the role of finishers; spinners opening the bowling; freelancers.
This generation of West Indies players have done more than any other to shape T20 – and won 2 World Cups

Let’s celebrate how the West Indies have changed the face of T20 cricket and not for these results where I know the hurt will be felt in the Caribbean ?@<!---->T<!---->2<!---->0<!---->W<!---->o<!---->r<!---->l<!---->d<!---->C<!---->u<!---->p

Sri Lanka sign off with a good win. Plenty of takeaways from the World Cup, not least the arrival of young batting stars Nissanka and Asalanka. West Indies' title defence grinds to a halt. Is it also the end of an era? #<!---->W<!---->I<!---->v<!---->S<!---->L #<!---->T<!---->2<!---->0<!---->W<!---->o<!---->r<!---->l<!---->d<!---->C<!---->u<!---->p

A very impressive show from a lesser experienced Sri Lankan side vs the defending champions #<!---->W<!---->I @<!---->T<!---->2<!---->0<!---->W<!---->o<!---->r<!---->l<!---->d<!---->C<!---->u<!---->p. Their smiles and confidence is infectious.

Gayle has the most runs in Limited-overs ICC tournaments (WC, CT, WT20) – 2927 runs in 84 matches.
He has played 16 such tournaments in 19 years.
But, just 30 runs in 4 games of this T20 World Cup makes it his worst ICC tournament. @<!---->h<!---->e<!---->n<!---->r<!---->y<!---->g<!---->a<!---->y<!---->l<!---->e #<!---->W<!---->I #<!---->G<!---->a<!---->y<!---->l<!---->e #<!---->t<!---->2<!---->0<!---->w<!---->o<!---->r<!---->l<!---->d<!---->c<!---->u<!---->p<!---->2<!---->0<!---->2<!---->1

It feels like the end of a great era to T20 cricket for the West Indies, and nothing personifies more poignantly than the melancholy walk back by the T20 legend, Chris Gayle

There are a few cricket lovers who will be disappointed to see #<!---->S<!---->r<!---->i<!---->L<!---->a<!---->n<!---->k<!---->a go. The talent in players like Asalanka and Nissanka has been wonderful to see. Add Rajapakse, Hasaranga, Chameera, Karunaratne, Theekshana and there is a great base to build on.
