India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy’s fitness is becoming a slight concern for the team after he limped off the field against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the second qualifier match of the ongoing IPL 2021, ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021, scheduled to be played from October 17 to November 14 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman.

The 30-year-old from Tamil Nadu bowled his four overs for 26 runs and picked two wickets of Delhi openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw. However, soon after completing his quota of overs, he was seen limping off the field with Kolkata Knight Riders’ physio with him.

He has also been selected in India’s 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 based on his brilliant bowling form in the IPL 2021 where he has 18 wickets in 16 fixtures at an average of 22.77 and a brilliant economy rate of 6.40. However, the leg-spinner has not been one of the fittest members in an otherwise agile Indian team, having previously failed fitness tests.

He had previously missed out on opportunities to make his India debut after the IPL 2020 as a shoulder injury kept him from touring Australia for three one-day internationals and three T20 international matches series. Then, he was chosen for the home five-match T20I series against England and he couldn’t play that due to his knee issues and poor fitness.

It was also earlier reported that Varun Chakravarthy was dealing with immense pain in his knees and had been taking pain-killing injections in order to play the IPL 2021 matches for KKR. He was advised not to dive or make sudden sideways movements to keep his knee injuries from aggravating.

If Chakravarthy is not fit enough for his injuries to be managed by the Indian team medical personnel, then the BCCI still has till October 15 to make changes in the squad.

As noted earlier, India swapped all-rounder Shardul Thakur with Axar Patel in the T20 World Cup squad. This was due to the presence of Ravindra Jadeja in the main squad who will be the first-choice spin all-rounder.
