Rohit Sharma on Wednesday opened the innings with KL Rahul against Afghanistan after the former was demoted at No.3 against New Zealand.
Rohit got back into his rhythm and scored a brilliant half-century to terrorise the Afghanistan bowlers on the pitch.
Rohit Sharma scores 74 against Afghanistan
Rohit’s 47-ball 74 included eight boundaries and three sixes and also forged a 140-run stand with KL Rahul before the Mumbai batter was caught by Mohammad Nabi at the cover region in the 15th over.
Rohit failed to display his audacity in the games against Pakistan and New Zealand, where he mustered the scores of 0 & 14.
Rohit and Rahul’s brilliant knocks helped India to post a humongous total of 210/2.
Really enjoyed Rohit Sharma’s knock: Aakash Chopra
Former Indian player Aakash Chopra noted that whenever Rohit scores, India prevails in the game.
“When Rohit Sharma does not make runs, India does not do well, honestly speaking. When he scores a half-century, Team India wins, and then there is no tension,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
“The best thing I liked was that the first shot he hit over cover, that was the trailer that he was not thinking about playing cautiously. He started hitting well, and when he plays a knock like that, I really enjoyed that knock. He made 74 runs off 47 balls,” he added.
In response to India’s score, Afghanistan could only score 144 runs and eventually lost by 66 runs.
Pace bowler Mohammed Shami led India’s bowling charts against Afghanistan with his three wickets for 32 runs.
Shami’s dismissals included Mohammad Shahzad, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan.
Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who played his first T20 International match after a gap of more than four years, returned with impressive figures of 2/14 in his four-over spell.
Ashwin’s long-term ally in the spin department, Ravindra Jadeja, too bowled brilliantly to get the wicket of Afghanistan batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
India will play their next match against Scotland at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
