Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar is extremely puzzled by the regular exclusion of India’s off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, from the playing XI of Tests and the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Ashwin was recently kept out of the Indian Test team against England in the 5-match Test series and was benched for the first two games against Pakistan and New Zealand in the T20 World Cup. Being one of India’s premier spinners, it is hard to understand why Ashwin keeps getting axed, as per Vengsarkar.

Why is Ashwin being so dropped for so long? It is a matter of investigation. Across formats, he is your best spinner with more than 600 international wickets. He is your senior-most spinner and you don’t pick him. I fail to understand. He didn’t play a single game in the England Test series also. Why do you pick him then? It is a mystery to me,” Vengsarkar was quoted as saying to PTI.

Team India has performed miserably in the first two games of the tournament, pretty much getting themselves out of the reckoning for the semifinals spot. They are very much dependent on the other results going in their favor. Even that may not help them because of Virat Kohli and co’s poor net run-rate. Speaking about their dismal results so far, Dilip Vengsarkar said:

The team looked off-colored and players looked jaded. I don’t know if it is the bio bubble fatigue or something else, I have not seen such body language in the players in a long time. It was quite a lackluster performance, be it in batting or bowling. This format demands you to be energetic from ball one.

India has three more matches to go in the competition and they have to win every single one of them. They will also need the Kiwis and the Afghans to lose a game as well and hope their net run rate becomes better.
