The BCCI announced the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2022 on September 12. Senior pacer Mohammed Shami has returned to the squad with Rohit Sharma leading the side. Among the other nominal names, Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel are also back in the squad. Shami finds himself in the reserves alongside Ravi Bishnoi and Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar.
Deepak Chahar returned to the Indian team for the Asia Cup but was not a part of the Orginal squad. He was among the reserves much like he has in this T20 World Cup squad.
Chahar was out of the Indian team owing to a back injury. He last played for India in February 2022 and since then was out of the side. He made a comeback in the Asia Cup and played the last Super 4 game against Afghanistan.
Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Shami are not a part of India’s original World Cup squad. Their omission became the subject of debate soon after the squad was announced. Both are among India’s premier bowlers. While Shami is a line and length bowler, Chahar is a premier swing bowler. Being in the reserves they can only get to play if the regular bowlers in the side get injured. In this article, we take a look at three reasons why Deepak Chahar should have been in India’s original T20 World Cup squad.
3 Reasons Why Deepak Chahar Deserved A Place In India Squad For T20 World Cup 2022
1) India’s Premier Swing Bowler
Chahar is India’s premier swing bowler along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Both could have formed a terrific combination in the Australian pitches that aids pace and swing. He has the best figures for any Indian bowler in T20I cricket (6/7) against Bangladesh. Despite returning to the team fully fit, he was not included in India’s main squad for the T20 World Cup.
2) Takes Wickest Regularly In The Powerplay
Among all the Indian bowlers, Chahar regularly bowls almost all his overs inside the powerplay. That is how MS Dhoni uses him in CSK in the IPL and that is how the Indian captains have used him over time. He invariably picks up wickets consistently within the powerplay. He has picked 26 T20I wickets so far and the majority of them are inside the powerplay.
3) Adds Depth To The Batting Lineup
Chahar has great potential with the bat as well. He helped India win a game against Sri Lanka in 2021 with the bat scoring 69 runs. He could have added depth to the Indian batting lineup which is crucial in bigger tournaments.
