Team India’s dream of winning their second T20 World Cup title did not materialize after they lost to England in the semi-final. The match turned out to be a fairly one-sided one given the different approaches of the two teams. This was India’s third final overall in T20 World Cups, but their dream to win their second T20 World Cup title continues. Meanwhile, England will face Pakistan in the final at MCG on November 13, Sunday.

India won the toss and chose to bat in Adelaide. They scored 168/6 in their 20 overs which did not prove to be enough. KL Rahul yet again failed to score against a top team in this World Cup. 3(8) vs Pakistan, 18(16) vs New Zealand, 4(8) vs Pakistan, 9(14) vs South Africa, and 5 (5) vs England were his scores against the top teams in this World Cup that points to his inability to score consistently against them. The fifties from Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya did not prove o be enough. Rohit Sharma scored 27 off 28 balls in the semi-final.

England cantered through to the target in 16 overs with skipper Jos Buttler 80* and Alex Hales 86* putting up an unbeaten 170-run stand. This is the best stand for any wicket in a T20 World Cup and the second-best against India. England’s approach was completely different from that of India in the semi-final. They scored 98 in the first 10 overs and controlled the game on their on. The target was finally reached in 16 overs.

None of the Indian bowlers had a chance to pick up wickets as Buttler and Hales decimated all the bowlers around the park. This was England’s most complete performance in the World Cup which came in the semi-final. Four of the six Indian bowlers went for an economy of over 10 in the run-chase pointing out to the fact that they were well and truly outplayed.

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar said that a few cricketers might retire from T20Is after this result. A BCCI official also spoke on the same lines while adding that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be on themselves to decide their T20I future. Meanwhile, in this article, we take a look at three Indian players who were responsible for India’s World Cup exit.

ICC T20 World Cup 2022: 3 Indian Players Responsible For India’s World Cup Exit

1) KL Rahul

Rahul scored 128 runs from six games with an average of 21.33. This included two fifty-plus knocks that came against the Netherlands (51) and Bangladesh (50). However, against the bigger teams, Rahul did not score too many to help India’s cause. In the final against England, he scored just five off five balls. 3(8) vs Pakistan, 18(16) vs New Zealand, 4(8) vs Pakistan, 9(14) vs South Africa were his scores against the big teams.

Rahul’s inability to score against the big teams meant that India never got a good start within the power play. India managed to score above 40 just once in this World Cup (46/1 vs Zimbabwe). Rahul leads the pack of Indian batters who failed to step up in the World Cup and his T20I future should be looked into.

2) Rohit Sharma

Rohit scored 116 runs from six innings with just 1 fifty-plus score in this World Cup. He averaged below 20 and just like Rahul did not score against the top teams. He scored (4 vs Pakistan), (53 vs Netherlands), (15 vs South Africa), (2 vs Bangladesh), (15 vs Zimbabwe), and (27 vs England). Rohit led India’s ultra-aggressive approach with the bat after India’s World Cup debacle in 2021.

He carried on with that approach for the majority of this year but come to the World Cup, he could not bring that approach into play. He was dismissed in the slips and also trying to go for his favorite pull shot. India’s batting was the biggest disappointment in this World Cup and Rohit along with Rahul were at the helm of it failing to give India consistent starts.

3) Axar Patel

Axar Patel was chosen over Yuzvendra Chahal in this T20 World Cup. Heading into this World Cup, Chchal was India’s leading spinner but he did not get a game. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh after India’s loss in the semi-final said that Chahal might have done something really wrong to be benched throughout the tournament.

Patel was included in the XI because of his all-round prowess as a cricketer. However, as it turned out, he was not good at even one aspect of his game. He picked up just three wickets in the entire tournament. Against England, in the semis, he went for 30 off his four overs at 7.5 runs per over.

With the bat, He had scores of 2 vs PAK, 7 vs BAN and 0* against Zimbabwe. India did not get what they expected from Axar throughout the tournament and even in the final. It will be interesting to how the management foresees his T20 future.
