New Zealand Cricket Team quite comfortably won the match against Sri Lanka. Kiwis won the match by 65 runs and the team didn’t give an inch to the Sri Lanka batters as defending 168 runs requires a collective team effort. Sri Lanka now has lost two back-to-back matches and now is on the verge of getting eliminated
New Zealand had won the toss and elected to bat first. The Black Caps had a terrible power-play where they lost 3 wickets and scored only 25 runs. Glenn Philips and Daryl Mitchell were involved in an 84 runs partnership. The batters were converting singles into twos and toying with the fielders. Glenn Phillips smashed his maiden T20I Century as he scored 104 runs in 64 balls and struck 10 fours and 4 sixes.
New Zealand Bowlers Decimate Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka got off to a dreadful start as they lost 4 wickets in the power-play overs and scored only 24 runs. It looked as if the batters couldn’t handle the speed and swing. Trent Boult created havoc along with Tim Southee as the duo was spot-on with their line and length. Trent Boult took 4 scalps for 13 runs in his 4 over spell.
Sri Lanka was always behind the 8th ball in the run chase. Skipper Dasun Shanaka’s decision to bat at the No.7 position was quite questionable as he is someone who can provide stability to the team in the middle of a collapse.
Shanka and Rajapaksa gave some hope to Sri Lankan fans as the duo was involved in a 34 runs partnership. Rajapaksa was looking ominous but too many shots resulted in his departure. The left-handed batter scored 34 runs in 27 balls where he smashed 3 fours and 2 sixes.
Shanka was fighting a lone battle as the batter scored 35 runs in 32 balls. He was facing tough times to clear the fence. New Zealand wrapped up the match in 19.2 overs and won the match by 65 runs which is a huge number in T20I Cricket.
New Zealand now is at the top of the table with this resounding victory with 5 points from 3 matches with a +3.85 NRR. The Black Caps are one step closer to qualifying for Semi-Finals. Sri Lanka on the other hand is reeling at 5th position with 2 points from 3 matches as their NRR is -0.89. The Island Nation will have to hope that they win the next 2 matches with a huge margin and at the same time they don’t have their fate in their hands.
