India National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma is hopeful of joining MS Dhoni as Indian captain to win an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournament.

Rohit Sharma will be leading the Men In Blue for the first time in a World Cup in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. The T20 World Cup 2022, which is the eighth edition of the multi-nation tournament, is scheduled to be played from October 16 to November 13.

In their tournament opener, India National Cricket Team will lock horns with Babar Azam-led Pakistan National Cricket Team on October 23 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Ahead of the commencement of the T20 World Cup 2022, Rohit talked about his experience of being part of India’s T20 World Cup 2007 winning squad under the leadership of legendary captain MS Dhoni.

“When I was picked for that World Cup I did not go with any expectations about myself,” Rohit said in Melbourne on Saturday alongside the other 15 captains who are in Australia for this year’s T20 World Cup.

“I just wanted to enjoy the tournament and play the tournament as it was my first ever World Cup. I had no understanding of what it was like to be part of a World Cup and how big it was going to be until we actually won the World Cup,” he added.

Notably, then-20-year-old Rohit left a strong impact in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2007 in South Africa. He had smashed a good half-century against South Africa in India’s last group match and then backed up that effort with an unbeaten 30, while batting at No.6, in the final against Pakistan in Johannesburg.

India National Cricket Team captain highlighted that the T20 format of the game has completely evolved over the years. He said:

“It has been a long journey and the game has evolved so much. You can literally see how it is played now compared to what it was like in 2007. 140 or 150 was a good score back then and now people try and get that score in 14 or 15 overs.”

Rohit Sharma further said that the teams nowadays take more risks in the T20 format of the game, which he feels is a good thing.

“Teams take more risks (now) without worrying about the result and I think that is a good way to play this format,” Rohit noted.

“It is something that our team is also trying to do. This is the kind of format where there is risk, but there are high rewards as well. We have got to be brave enough to take those risks and certainly be prepared to do that as well.”
