Imran Khan, the 1992 World Cup-winning captain and a former Pakistani prime minister, praised Pakistan’s bowling speed attack and claimed Shaheen Shah’s injury was a turning point in the match against England on Sunday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Despite the loss, Pakistan’s performance in Australia exceeded expectations after they were defeated by the Netherlands a week earlier and South Africa’s shocking loss to the Netherlands in their first two Super 12 matches.

When Pakistan brought the final against England to the second-to-last over on Sunday, they were within millimetres of reviving the spirit of the 1992 ODI World Cup victory. However, it wasn’t Babar Azam and Company’s fortunate day as Jos Buttler’s team won the 2022 T20 World Cup trophy.

Shaheen’s injury had a significant impact on the final match against England, according to the former Pakistani captain, Imran Khan who yet praised Pakistan for its tenacity. While taking a catch to remove Harry Brook with the match still in doubt, Shaheen Shah Afridi hurt himself.

Shaheen Afridi Could Have Made A Difference: Imran Khan

“I used to tell my team to fight till the last bowl. Try your best. But when the result comes, and you have given your best, then it’s a God’s will. But what is not in your hands the way Shaheen Afridi was injured, no one can do anything about that.

And unfortunately, it happened at a time when the match was at a very important stage, and Shaheen could have made a difference,” Imran Khan said.

“I am not saying that we could have won, but it was at a time when the game could have been changed,” he added.

Afridi was reinstated into the assault with five overs left after receiving treatment, but he only played one delivery before leaving the MCG again in pain.

Following their victory in the West Indies in 2010, England won its second T20 World Cup thanks to judicious bowling and composed batting.

England laboured for a while in the midst of their chase after holding Pakistan to 137 for 8 in Melbourne before Ben Stokes picked up the pace with five overs left.
