Virat Kohli made a return to the Indian squad for the Asia Cup after a well-deserved break. He played a couple of T20Is against England and West Indies earlier this year. He was not a part of the T20I squad that played the recent series against the Windies.

Kohli’s return to India’s Asia Cup is a massive news ahead of the multi-nation tournament in the UAE. However, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra is concerned with his form and numbers in recent times. Kohli has been woefully short of runs and his modes of dismissals have also been similar.

“The truth is that many runs have not come from his bat but the player is mighty. Virat Kohli’s numbers are really underwhelming, not only by his standards, but even if you see the industry standards, these numbers are quite ordinary.”

Aakash Chopra however added that Kohli’s place in the side cannot be questioned given his overall international numbers.

“He has played just four T20Is in almost 10 months, in which he scored a total of 80 runs at an average of 20 and a strike rate of 129. But if you play only four matches in 10 months, there is nothing to read” Chopra added.

Chopra concluded by saying that he is hoping Kohli gets back his form in the Asia Cup which will set it up nicely for him leading up to the T20 World Cup in Australia in October.

“But six matches in the Asia Cup and six more T20Is after that and then the World Cup, this is where the flight must take off. Virat Kohli will remain on this list at No. 1. God forbid, I don’t even want to say what will happen if the Asia Cup is not good. I hope it will not be bad and after that there will be no discussion on his name” concluded Chopra.

Virat Kohli who has scored 71st international centuries and 43 of them in ODIs, has not scored an international century since December 2021.
