India women’s cricket team on Sunday was eliminated from the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 in a nail-biting encounter against South Africa at the Hagley Oval. The match went down to the wire and there were dramatic scenes played out in the final over.
All-rounder Deepti Sharma was left with the task to defend seven runs in the final over, the bowler hit a pinpoint throw at the non-striker’s end to run out South Africa wicketkeeper Trisha Chetty.

The match was brought down with three needed off the final two deliveries as Mignon du Preez, who scored a gritty fifty, holed out to Harmanpreet at long-on as India went on to celebrate the wicket.
The match looked almost sealed with du Preez’s dismissal, the third umpire check confirmed that Deepti had overstepped during her bowling and the South African batter survived to hit the winning runs on the final ball of the match.
India failed to make it through the semis after finishing with six points, one behind West Indies in the league stage of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022. India had to win the match anyhow to qualify for the knockout stage.
India’s elimination also means it was their skipper Mithali Raj’s last game in the Indian jersey at the international stage. Earlier in the match, Mithali scored 68 off 84 balls to push India’s score to 274/7 in the first innings. The Indian stalwart hit eight boundaries during her incredible innings batting at a strike rate of 80.95.
At the age of 39 years and 114 days, Raj, who is playing in her sixth World Cup event, became the oldest Indian player to score a fifty-plus score in World Cup matches. Indian openers Smriti Mandhana (71) and Shafali Verma (53) laid the foundation through their magnificent stand of 91 runs before the latter was run out.
India also lost to New Zealand, England and Australia in the marquee event while they won against Pakistan, West Indies and Bangladesh.
