Australia captain Pat Cummins talked about his side’s performance in the first ODI against India in Mohali. He admitted that they were not good enough overall and also provided an update about the availability of Glenn Maxwell and Micthell Starc in the series.

Australia came second in the first ODI against India, who outshined them with bat and all. Asked to bat first, they weren’t good enough as lost Micthell Marsh (4) in the first over of the innings, which put them under pressure. However, after that senior duo of Steve Smith (41) and David Warner (51) chipped in and bailed their team out of trouble.

Marnus Labuschagne (39), Josh Inglis (45), and Marcus Stoinis (29) played handy knocks with the bat in the middle. Before Skipper Pat Cummins smashed 21 runs in just 9 balls to take Australia to a total of 276 runs. For India, Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers as he picked 5 wicketers. Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah picked one wicket each.

With the ball then, Australia struggled to pick early wickets as Shubman Gill (74) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (71) added 142 runs for the opening partnership. Adam Zampa and Pat Cummins brought their team back into the game with quick wickets. However, KL Rahul (58*) and Suryakumar Yadav (50) took the game away from Australia and won the game by 5 wickets to go 1-0 up in the series.

Pat Cummins after the game admitted that they played well in patches but it wasn’t a good performance overall by them. Speaking to broadcasters after the match, he explained:

“Personally, happy to be back. Good to get my first game in India. A few guys batted well, few guys bowled well but overall not good enough.”

They’d probably not be ready for the second game – Pat Cummins on Glenn Maxwell And Mitchell Starc’s Availability

Australia didn’t play their full-strength squad today as minor injuries in the camp didn’t allow them. Pat Cummins revealed that Glenn Maxwell and Micthell Starc will not be fit for the second ODI and they might return for the third game. He explained:

“They’d probably not be ready for the second game, maybe the third game. Maxi has just arrived in India. Smith’s first hit as well, and Davey was brilliant. Good to see them out there together. We’ve got one eye on the big tournament, but you want to set the standards early and build a good rhythm.”

India won the first game of the series by the margin of 5 wickets. The second ODI between the two teams will take place on 24 September.
