England batter Joe Root continued his purple patch from 2021 in 2022 as well as he slammed his fifth century this year and this one came in the rescheduled fifth Test match against India at Edgbaston on July 5, 2022.
England resumed on day 4 with 119 runs needed and wiped off 39 of those in the first 30 minutes of play as Indian bowlers sprayed the ball all over the park. Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root continued from where they had left on day four as Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian captain looked clueless against the two experienced England batters as the game slipped from the visitors’ hands.
Ben Stokes had set up the game for England by picking 4 wickets and bringing the third innings to a close much earlier than expected. Everyone was expecting India to post a target of over 400 atleast, but the batting which had done so well in the first innings, crumbled against the England bowling pressure and were bowled out for 245 runs, leading by just 377 runs.
Joe Root Slams 11th Century In Last 24 Test Matches, Twitterverse Applauds
Joe Root has been in purple form this year which he has carried over from 2021 when he scored a bagful of runs both in England and outside England as well. He started off with 115*, 176, and 86* against New Zealand in the three-Test series recently and carried over that into this match as well, as he scored 31 in the first innings and now hit another century.
He has received huge support from Jonny Bairstow as well, who is on verge of his second hundred of the match, following his innings saving 106 in the first innings.
During his knock, Root went past Virat Kohli’s record of most runs in one England-India Test series. Kohli had scored 655 runs in 2016 and Root broke that record with 564 came in the first four matches which were played last year before the series got suspended midway due to Covid-19 cases emerging inside the Indian bio-bubble.
