Irfan Pathan, a former Indian all-rounder, used social media on Tuesday to share his thoughts on how the Indian cricket team should proceed.

He said that the openers should be allowed to play freely, wrist spinners should be included in the playing eleven, and the squad should attack fast bowlers.

He added that changing the captaincy wouldn’t provide the desired outcomes, but that the strategy needed to alter.

Indian cricket going forward 1) Openers playing freely, At least one of them. 2) Wrist spinner (wicket taker ) is must. 3) Tear away fast bowler. 4) please don’t think changing captaincy will give us changed result. It’s the approach what needs to change.

His remarks were made roughly a week after the Men in Blue were eliminated from the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup following their semifinal loss to England.

“Hardik is an injury-prone player given his role”: Irfan Pathan

Speaking on the Star Sports program “Match Point,” Irfan Pathan noted that Hardik is a player who is prone to injuries given his position as a fast-bowling all-arounder. The Indian icon wants India to develop additional leaders in addition to Hardik because he worries that India could get into serious difficulty if he gets hurt just before the World Cup.

“I’m not saying that if you change the captain you change the result, if you go like that you’re not going to change the result. And with Hardik Pandya, you need to understand, we all need to understand, that he’s a fast bowling all-rounder. He has injury issues as well. What if he is your captain who is getting injured right before the World cup? And if you don’t have any other leader ready, you’ll be in a mess,”  Irfan Pathan said.

“So, what I personally think is that Hardik Pandya is a leader, who has done very well in the Gujarat Titians, won IPL, won the championship trophy. You need to find not one, but two leaders going forward to build their mark. You know just like we talk about openers – we need to have a group of openers, we also need to have a group of leaders,”  Irfan Pathan added.

The New Zealand T20I series begins on November 18 onwards.
