Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri hailed all-rounder Washington Sundar’s batting performance amid India’s ODI series loss to New Zealand. The hosts lost the first game to the Kiwis. The second ODI in Hamilton was affected due to rain as was the third which also ended in a no-result.

The series turned out to be good for the Indian top order. The likes of Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Shikhar Dhawan all got runs. However, Ravi Shastri was most impressed by the performance of Washington Sundar. He said amid a few positives for India, Sundar’s impact performance was the biggest positive for the team.

The southpaw scored a 16-ball 37 to help India reach 307/6 in the first ODI. In the second, he scored 64-ball 51 in India’s total of 219. He came into bat with his team in a spot of bother at 212/5 in the 26th over after the fall of Shreyas Iyer‘s wicket. Ravi Shastri who was one of the commentators on the tour said that Sundar grabbed the opportunity with both hands in the absence of the senior players.

“He grabbed the opportunity with both hands. And today I think he showed great maturity with the bat. Tough conditions, the top order struggled, and the ball was beating the bat but right from the outset in 5-7 minutes you knew this guy was composed,” Shastri said on Amazon Prime video after the 3rd ODI.

“He looked organized, he left the ball well and the balance was fabulous and his footwork very positive. When he hit a couple of boundaries you knew he was on his way. So, this innings will do him a world of good. Proper batter in tough conditions to get a half-century. I think he should take that,” he added.

The former Indian head coach pointed out a few more positives for India in the short series. He said the likes of Iyer and Gill getting runs in tough conditions and Umran Malik getting two wickets in his ODI debut were other big positives from the series.

“I think a lot of positives came from this one-day series. Shreyas Iyer getting runs in a couple of matches. Willing to stay there and willing to go through the tough period. Suryakumar of course has the potential, has the talent, and he will deliver.”

“Sundar, I thought was very good. And even Umran Malik, I like the way he bowled. There’s potential there. If he can persevere, it will be very good. All around, there was very positive Shubman Gill at the start of the innings,” he further said.

India now travels to Bangladesh for three ODIs and two Test matches between December 4-22. The three ODIs take place on December 4, 7, and 10. The two Tests begin on December 14 and December 22.
