Jasprit Bumrah, India’s ODI vice-captain for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa, has said that there is no problem whatsoever or nobody is in a weird space when it comes to the transition in the Indian team with regards to coaching staff and captaincy.
The right-handed pacer said the recent changes in India’s leadership – both captaincy and coaching – will not affect the functioning of the team with the players all “respectful” and “understanding”. Virat Kohli quit T20I captaincy after the T20 World Cup last year, with Rohit Sharma taking over the leadership duties.
While Kohli showed a desire to lead India in both ODIs and Tests going forward, the BCCI selection panel handed Rohit Sharma the ODI captaincy as well. In a dramatic and shocking turn of events, Kohli stepped down as Test captain of the Indian team after the 1-2 series loss to South Africa.
I Think That’s The Way All The Players Are Responding To The Changes That Are Happening As Well: Jasprit Bumrah
Apart from this, Rahul Dravid took over as head coach from Ravi Shastri after the T20 World Cup 2021, and Paras Mhambrey and T Dilip were named as the new bowling and fielding coaches of the Indian team till the 2023 World Cup.
Talking about these changes, Bumrah said the players have respected the decisions and have taken them in a positive way.
“See, I can’t speak for everyone but for me, I can say that it doesn’t really make a lot of difference. Yes, we all are here to help in however way we can. And I think that’s the way all the players are responding to the changes that are happening as well. Everybody is respectful and they understand how the processes are going. Change is the only constant, so we’re happy. Yes, everybody is contributing, we are getting a lot of knowledge. Everybody’s trying to contribute towards that,” Bumrah said in an online press conference on Monday (January 17).
“So I don’t think anybody is facing a problem or is in a weird space with the change that is happening. Everybody understands the chain. Everybody’s played enough cricket to understand that this is the way the game goes and this is how you have to move forward. So everyone’s as a team, everyone in the team is quite positive and quite eager to contribute and go about the change that is happening,” he added.
Furthermore, in the press conference, Bumrah said that while he is not chasing the captaincy of Team India at the moment, he would be honored if he is ever handed the reins of the Indian team.
