Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has suggested the Indian team to make 4 changes in the playing XI ahead of the third and final ODI match of the series against South Africa.
Temba Bavuma-led South Africa won the first ODI by 31 runs and second ODI by 7 wickets against India to get an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and the dead rubber third ODI will be played in Cape Town on Sunday.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Manjrekar said that Shikhar Dhawan should be rested for the last ODI and Venkatesh Iyer should be given an opportunity to open the innings so that Suryakumar Yadav can fit in the middle order. He added that pacer Deepak Chahar should replace Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the team. Sanjay Manjrekar said:
“In batting, Suryakumar Yadav should be included. We’ve seen Shikhar Dhawan, he’s a ready-made option for big matches and has shown good form too. So you can rest him and open with Venkatesh Iyer to fit Suryakumar Yadav in the middle-order. Deepak Chahar should come in place for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. I saw him in Sri Lanka, he bowled really well so you should test him.”
Sanjay Manjrekar feels that Prasidh Krishna or Mohammed Siraj should replace Jasprit Bumrah in the team if he needs some rest. The 4th change Sanjay Manjrekar wanted India to make was to include Jayant Yadav in place of Ravichandran Ashwin. He asserted:
“If you want to give Jasprit Bumrah some rest then you can look towards Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj. And Jayant Yadav in place of Ashwin. There will be a comparison between Ashwin and Jayant Yadav’s 10 overs but Jayant Yadav will also bring some batting.”
If they can give two or three players a chance and one or two can shine then it will be brilliant for Indian cricket – Sanjay Manjrekar
The 56-year-old believes that India missed a golden opportunity by not using youngsters in the ODI series against South Africa. Sanjay Manjrekar elaborated:
“They should look at all these changes because I feel India has missed a golden opportunity by not using this series to test the upcoming talent. The World Cup Super League points are not being counted in this One-Day series. So they should have given the upcoming players a chance from the first match itself but they did the exact opposite and still lost. Whether they win or lose in the last match they have already lost the series. If they can give two or three players a chance and one or two can shine then it will be brilliant for Indian cricket.”
