Iyer made his T20I debut for India in the series against New Zealand at home. He is being seen as a potential replacement for Hardik Pandya who has not played too much cricket in recent times due to the issues with his back.

A good series with the bat and the ball for Iyer against South Africa can certainly help him cement his place in the XI. He is likely to make his ODI debut in the series. As he has shown for KKR, he can bat at the top of the order and bowl useful overs for the team. He produced the same in the series against the Kiwis. The series thus is going to be an important one for Iyer.

Siraj has well and truly established himself in the Indian Test setup. Since his debut in Australia in 2020, Siraj has improved by leaps and bounds as a cricketer. However, he is yet to make his presence felt in the Indian ODI setup.

He made his ODI debut against Australia in 2019 going for 76 runs off his 10 overs. Since then he has not played ODIs for India again. The series presents him with another opportunity to stamp his authority in limited-overs cricket as well.

Washington Sundar

Sundar recovered from a hand injury that kept him out from the T20 World Cup to make himself available for the three-match IND vs SA ODI series. Given the seam-friendly conditions in South Africa, Sundar might find it difficult to find a place in the XI.

Ashwin and Chahal will probably get a nod ahead of him as the specialist spinners with Iyer primed to play all three matches in the series. However, if he gets an opportunity to play in the series, he should make it count by coming up with a substantial contribution for the team. So far in his brief career, Sundar has played four Tests, 31 T20Is and just a solitary ODI for India. He made his ODI debut back in 2017 against Sri Lanka.
