Legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar while talking about KL Rahul who was the stand-in captain of India for the Johannesburg Test match against South Africa said that he made “life a little bit easy for” Proteas skipper Dean Elgar by giving him singles at the start of the second innings.

Rahul was appointed as the skipper of the team after Virat Kohli was ruled out of the second Test match against South Africa due to a back spasm and Rahul-led India lost the match by 7 wickets.

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar highlighted that Elgar is not a hooker of the ball and keeping two fielders in the deep was a mistake by Rahul.

This was the first time actually that India have lost a Test match in which Virat Kohli as captain has not played. On KL Rahul, I would say giving Dean Elgar those singles at the start of the second innings was making life a little bit easy for him. Dean Elgar is not one of the hookers of the ball, so you have two men in the deep that does not make any sense. He was taking singles comfortably and scoring runs,” Gavaskar said while speaking on Star Sports’ post-match show.

Gavaskar was also not satisfied with the way Indian players did fielding at the Wanderers, Johannesburg against South Africa in the second Test match and said that the fielding could have been a little sharper.

“Indian fielding also could have been just a little bit sharper. I think it’s the South Africans who won the game and I don’t think the Indians lost it,” he added.

Meanwhile, now the series is levelled at 1-1 with the last match taking place from January 11-15, at the Newlands, Cape Town.
