Ravichandran Ashwin became only the second Indian spinner to take a wicket in Johannesburg after Anil Kumble. Ashwin dismissed Keegan Petersen for 28 and broke a 46-run stand with his skipper Dean Elgar who ended the day unbeaten on 46. Apart from Ashwin, Anil Kumble is the only other Indian spinner to take a wicket in Johannesburg.

Kumble had taken 17 wickets in Johannesburg, the last of which came way back in 2006. Ashwin, on the other end, is just playing his second Test at this venue. He played his first Test here in 2013 and remained wicketless.

Ashwin’s wicket of Petersen came at the right time for India as he was building an important partnership that was looking threatening for the visitors. The ball pitched outside off=-stump and turned sharply as it thudded the batter’s pads. Ashwin appealed and the decision went in his favour. The right-hander wanted to review it but his skipper Elgar advised him not to take the review. The replays confirmed that the ball was hitting the wickets.

Meanwhile, in another interesting achievement, Ravichandran Ashwin became the first spinner after Pakistan’s Shadab Khan to take a wicket in Johannesburg. Khan took a total of four wickets in that Test.

Meanwhile, South Africa in their quest to chase down 241 to win are already at 118/2. Skipper Elgar is holding one end up unbeaten on 46. With him at the other end is Rassie Van der Dussen (11*). The hosts lost the wickets of Aiden Markram (31) and Petersen in the final session on day 3.

The hosts are favourites to win from this position needing 122 more runs to win. However, the uneven bounce in the pitch might make it hard for the hosts. India have enough firepower in their bowling attack to get the remaining 8 wickets.
