Former India wicketkeeper and national selector Saba Karim has said that the Indian spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal looked clueless after South Africa batters started playing sweep and the reverse sweep against them in the first ODI of the three-match ODI series at Boland Park, Paarl.
KL Rahul-led India lost the first ODI of the three-match ODI series against South Africa by 31 runs. Batting first South Africa scored 296 runs with the help of an amazing 204-run partnership between Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen. India while chasing the target were restricted India to 265/8.

Former India wicketkeeper-batsman was critical of Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin’s performance in the first ODI against the Proteas. Notably, the spin duo gave away 106 runs for 1 wicket in their combined 20 overs quota.
“We need to have bowlers who can pick wickets in the middle overs. Our two wicket-taking options, Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal didn’t know where to bowl after the South Africa batters started to use the sweep and the reverse sweep against them,” he said on the Khelneeti podcast.

Karim feels that India need to utilise the other resources available in the squad because pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar hasn’t delivered a good performance and has looked lacklustre. He added that Bhuvneshwar’s efficacy with the new ball is not the same and Deepak Chahar should come in as his replacement in the playing XI.
“There must be changes if someone like Bhuvneshwar Kumar hasn’t been able to perform as expected despite too many chances. You will have to utilize the other resources that you have in the squad. It’s easier to find a suitable bowling combination when you have someone like Ravindra Jadeja in the side.”
“Bhuvneshwar’s efficacy with the new ball is just not the same now. India should look to play Deepak Chahar instead, who can also contribute with the bat lower down the order. We need to invest in bowlers who can give us breakthroughs with the new ball,” he further said.
