Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar reacting to Shardul Thakur’s amazing 7-wicket haul in the second Test against South Africa at the Wanderers, Johannesburg said that the bowling all-rounder will either go for four or will bag a wicket and Manjrekar feels that’s the reason behind Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni always including Thakur in the playing XI in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Shardul Thakur came to bowl in 37th over of South Africa’s first innings and he picked wickets back-to-back, he broke two partnerships and with his 18-over spell he broke the back of the Proteas batting unit and helped restrict South Africa to a first-innings lead of just 27 runs. He also became the sixth Indian to have a Test fifer in Johannesburg.

Reviewing Day 2 of the India-South Africa Test on ESPNcricinfo Manjrekar said Thakur’s amazing performance doesn’t surprise him. He reasoned:

“Every time Shardul has bowled for India, he has got wickets. He puts the ball where he is likely to get wickets. It doesn’t surprise me every time Shardul Thakur picks up wickets. He’s one of those bowlers who will take a chance. He’ll either go for four or he will get a wicket. That’s why CSK play him. Dhoni has never dropped Shardul Thakur.”

Former Indian cricketer feels that Shardul is an underrated bowler who has got a “street-smart cricketing brain”. He asserted:

“Shardul is one of those underrated bowlers who you’d think is at best fourth seamer in the side, someone you can knock off runs against after playing of Bumrah or Shami. But he’s got a street-smart cricketing brain. I’m really happy that India have backed him in two tests. He will now start challenging Mohammed Siraj.”

Former South African cricketer Daryll Cullinan was not impressed with the pitch at the Wanderers, Johannesburg during the second Test between India and South Africa. He criticized the pitch and said that it’s not an ideal surface for a Test match. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo Cullinan said:

“If we have a dry night and a warm sun in the morning, I think the saving grace may be that we won’t go to the fifth day. Because I cannot imagine what the surface will look like on Day 5. It’s not the type of surface you’d ideally want for any Test match anyway.”
