Indian middle-order batsman Hanuma Vihari was dropped from India playing XI in the third Test match of the three-match Test series against Dean Elgar-led South Africa at the Newlands, Cape Town on Tuesday, January 11.

India captain Virat Kohli who got ruled out of the second Test at the Wanderers, Johannesburg, came in as Vihari’s replacement in the Test match.

Notably, Kohli was ruled out of the second Test due to an upper back spasm and KL Rahul was given the responsibility to lead the team. India lost that match by 7 wickets and the series is currently leveled and the final match is being held in Cape Town.

Meanwhile, Hanuma Vihari who got the opportunity to play the second Test in the absence of Kohli did a decent job for the team as he scored 20(53) & 40*(84). This was Vihari’s first match after his Sydney Cricket Ground heroics against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Vihari played the match-saving knock of 23* off 237 balls, batting close to 3 hours with a grade 2 hamstring tear on January 11th, 2021 against Australia and on January 11th, 2022 he was dropped from India playing XI against South Africa.

Many cricket pundits have suggested that Vihari should get a permanent slot in the Test playing XI and he should replace either Cheteshwar Pujara or Ajinkya Rahane who have been inconsistent with the bat for a very long time.

Here’s How Twitter Reacted To Hanuma Vihari’s Exclusion:

India National Cricket Team made two changes in the playing XI as Virat Kohli came in for Vihari and Umesh Yadav replaced injured Mohammed Siraj in the team. Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first in the match.

You cannot control what’s above your head. Runs on this venue have always worked out well. I am fit and fine. I come in for Vihari. Siraj misses out because of a niggle and Umesh comes in for him. Umesh has been very potent with the ball recently, very handy in the field and with the bat as well. It was a tough decision to choose between the two (Ishant and Umesh). We are expected to win every Test even when we play overseas and that fourth innings chase from South Africa was a special one from them. It is a beautiful stadium and we are very excited,” said Kohli after the toss.

India (Playing XI): KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(c), Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant(w), Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav
