Before the South Africa departure, Iyer spoke to TOI and he was asked how is he planning to mould his game to which he replied by saying that he started opening the innings from the last couple of years and before that he had batted as a middle-order batsman so playing the role of a finisher “won’t be a new territory ” for him. Venkatesh Iyer said:
“I’ve batted in the middle-order for a long time. I’ve been an opener for just the past two years. Even in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy, I batted in the middle order, so it won’t be a new territory for me. I’ve accepted the fact that I’m going to play the role of a finisher for the team, and I’m completely ready for that. The most important thing is accepting it in your mind first, rather than the other people expecting it.”
I’m Not Here To Fill Anyone’s Shoes – Venkatesh Iyer On Feeling Any Pressure From Hardik Pandya’s Comeback
In the same interview with TOI, Venkatesh Iyer was asked does it put pressure on him that Hardik Pandya could come back into the team once he regains his fitness and form to which Iyer responded that he is not in the team to fill anyone’s shoes. The Madhya Pradesh all-rounder added that he is focused on contributing to the team’s victory and he is not thinking about a certain player’s return. He asserted:
“I’m not here to fill anyone’s shoes. I want to contribute to the team’s victory, and that’s my mindset. I’m not thinking that a certain player would come back or that he’s not in the team, that’s why I’m in the side. That’s not how I function. I believe that I’m in the team because I can bat and bowl. You are an opener with your IPL team and in the Madhya Pradesh team, but the team requires a finisher in you.”
