Star spin bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja suffered a right forearm injury during the first Test against New Zealand in Kanpur and was ruled out of the series against South Africa. Also, spin bowling all-rounder, Axar Patel was ruled out of the South Africa tour and it was up to Ravichandran Ashwin to fill the role of a spin bowling all-rounder in the team and he has done a good job so far.

In the pre-match press conference, Indian skipper Kohli said that Ashwin knows “his game has come forward by leaps and bounds”.

Jadeja’s value everyone understands and what he has done for the team, but I think Ash has been playing that role pretty well for us, Ash knows that his game has come forward by leaps and bounds especially bowling overseas. He understands that himself from Australia onwards,” Kohli said on the eve of the third and final Test against South Africa.

Kohli lauded Ashwin for his all-round contribution in the second Test against South Africa at the Wanderers Johannesburg. Notably, Ashwin played an amazing knock of 46 runs off 50 balls in the first innings and with the ball, he bagged one wicket in the second innings.

“If you look at his batting contribution in the last Test and the way he bowled in the second innings I think that’s an outstanding contribution to the team. He’s in a very comfortable space where he’s willing to contribute to the team and he’s doing so in the right intention, in the right way,” Kohli said, giving full support to the senior player.

Kohli added that Jadeja and Ashwin are quality cricketers and said that the latter can play the role of spinners all-rounder in any given conditions.

“When you have these two quality cricketers one or the other it really doesn’t matter. Unfortunately, Jadeja has had an injury. But Ash has obviously done the job in his absence and we have full faith that Ash can continue to play that role of spinning all-rounder for us in any condition that we play,” he asserted.
