Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar failed to understand Team India’s tactics on Day 4 of the Cape Town Test which ended in a 7-wicket defeat for Virat Kohli and co.

The Proteas had established themselves as the firm favorite after the first session as they needed just 41 runs in the remaining five sessions to win the match. They managed to complete it within 9 overs courtesy of some poor tactics from the Indian team.

It was a mystery to me why Shardul Thakur and Jasprit Bumrah did not bowl after lunch. It was almost as if India had decided that they are not going to win this.

The field placements there were for Ashwin (was not right)… There were singles available easily. Five fielders were in the deep. Let the batters take a chance that is your only opportunity to get them out,” Gavaskar told Star Sports after the defeat on Friday.

Sunil Gavaskar further mentioned that the home team was at the top of their game in the final two Tests. Their batters showed tremendous applications in the fourth innings of the 2nd and 3rd Test, chasing down targets in excess of 200 with seven wickets remaining.

The pitches weren’t the best for batting but the application shown by the South Africans in Johannesburg, the application shown by them in this Test as well has been praiseworthy. That showed the character of the team,” Gavaskar noted.

The defeat comes as a bitter pill to swallow for Kohli and co. as they were claimed to be the favorites to pocked their first Test series win on Protean shores.
