IND vs ZIM: KL Rahul Should Have Opened The Innings: Dodda Ganesh
After passing the required fitness test, India’s star batsman KL Rahul was abruptly added to the squad for the ODI series in Zimbabwe. Rahul was sent to Zimbabwe in order to give the Karnataka batter some match practise before the Asia Cup 2022, which begins on August 27.
Shikhar Dhawan, who was originally supposed to captain the backup team, was replaced by Rahul as the captain for the ODI series against Zimbabwe. Notably, despite not having participated in any T20Is this year, Rahul was selected as vice-captain for India’s Asia Cup team.
Rahul made his first appearance in a competitive match since he guided the Lucknow Super Giants to the IPL 2022 playoffs.
After being named captain, the star batter was unable to play in the home T20I series against South Africa because of sports hernia surgery. Rahul was supposed to make his comeback during India’s July tour of the West Indies, but he got Covid-19 before the team left for the Caribbean.
India Won The Game By 10 Wickets
After vice-captain Shikhar Dhawan noted that the 3-match series will be helpful for the skipper ahead of the Asia Cup, it was anticipated that KL Rahul would get some playing time in the middle in the opening ODI series match against Zimbabwe.
However, despite only needing to chase 190 in the first ODI, India started with Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill. KL Rahul was kept at No. 4 in India’s batting order, where he has recently flourished in the 50-over version of the game, keeping the opening combination from the ODIs against the West Indies.
Dodda Ganesh, a former India fast bowler, claimed on social media that Rahul ought to have started the game to gain experience before the Asia Cup.
“Ideally, KL Rahul should have opened the innings just to get some game time. He is bereft of batting in match conditions for a while,” Ganesh wrote on Twitter.
India chased down the target of 190 runs with 10 wickets left.
