Ravindra Jadeja was handed over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captaincy by MS Dhoni just days ahead of the opening match of IPL 2022. CSK face off against KKR in the first match of IPL 2022 on March 26 at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. There is a lot of anticipation regarding the contest as it is in many ways a rematch of the IPL 2021 final.

Meanwhile, former Punjab Kings batting coach Wasim Jaffer has shared his thoughts on the appointment of Ravindra Jadeja as the next CSK skipper. Talking to ESPN Cricinfo, Jaffer said that he is the right option given that the southpaw is at the peak of his powers as a cricketer.

“Ravindra Jadeja is a very good option as captain at this stage. He is in tremendous form across all three formats plus the fact that he is Indian and knows all the players and conditions well” Jaffer said.

Jaffer further spoke about MS Dhoni’s timing to give up on captaincy. He said that with him still around at least for this IPL season. Dhoni can groom Jadeja and help him sal through tough situations.

“Timing was (a bit surprising) as only two days were left for the IPL. But MS Dhoni is known for such surprises. He is a selfless cricketer, who always put the team and franchise above him. I think it is a very good choice. But the good thing is that if something goes wrong, MS Dhoni is there is give his valuable advice” Jaffer said.

Ravindra Jadeja was one of the four players retained by CSK ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. The southpaw was paid 16 crores while MS Dhoni was paid 12 crores by the management. Giving up on the captaincy is also a big hint at the fact that this might well be Dhoni’s last IPL season. MSD las led CSK in over 200 matches in which he has won four titles.
