Chennai Super Kings have lost their first three games in IPL 2022. They next face Sunrisers Hyderabad in Navi Mumbai in their fourth game of the season. Like CSK, SRH have also lost their opening two games of the season.
Former India and CSK cricketer Harbhajan Singh tried to decode the reason behind the team’s indifferent start this season. They are the defending champions of the tournament. However, they did not have a good start under their new skipper Ravindra Jadeja.
Talking to Star Sports Harbhajan said that the absence of Deepak Chahar is one of the two reasons why CSK have struggled this season. Harbhajan feels there is no perfect replacement for Chahar and CSK have struggled to find wickets inside the powerplay.
Chennai Super Kings Does Not Have Deepak Chahar’s Replacement: Harbhajan Singh
“They don’t have one, but two problems. In the first six overs, with the ball, they do not have someone like Deepak Chahar, who can give them early wickets with the new ball. Then after the powerplay, between overs 7 and 15, they do not have spinners who can provide them with wickets,” Harbhajan told Star Sports.
The veteran Indian spinner further said that Ruturaj Gaikwad not scoring runs for Chennai Super Kings has been the second key reason behind their struggle in this season so far. He has so far scored 0, 1 and 1 in his first three innings which has hampered CSK’s starts at the top. The side is also missing the opening starts that Faf du Plessis and Gaikwad gave them in IPL 2021.
“Ruturaj is getting out very early and hence there are no strong opening stands. So there are a lot of problems with the team. That is why you see that a team like Chennai Super Kings have lost all their three matches so far. Although, I won’t be surprised if Chennai make a comeback and keep on winning thereafter,” he added.
CSK have been the worst-performing bowling side in IPL 2022, picking just two wickets in three games and conceding almost 10 runs per over and a boundary almost every 4 balls inside the powerplay.
