The 17th match of the IPL 2022 saw Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on April 9, 2022, in the first game of a doubleheader. Both the teams came into this match without a win, with CSK on a three-match losing streak and SRH losing their first two games.
The match was an important one as the pitch at the DY Patil Stadium was a difficult one to bat on and SRH captain Kane Williamson won the toss and rightly chose to bowl first.
Sunrisers Hyderabad handed debut caps to South Africa’s Marco Jansen and Shashank Singh, while Chennai Super Kings also included a debutant in Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana.
Apart from Moeen Ali, who made 48 runs with 3 fours and 2 sixes, and Ambati Rayudu, who contributed 27 runs with 4 fours, none of the CSK batters could come to terms with the DY Patil pitch. Ravindra Jadeja scored 23 runs valuable runs to take CSK’s final total to 154/7.
Washington Sundar and T Natarajan picked two wickets each for SRH.
We Want To Keep On Improving- Kane Williamson
In reply, Sunrisers Hyderabad started off with a bit of caution with Kane Williamson scoring 32 runs in 40 balls with 2 fours and 1 six. However, his caution was balanced by young Abhishek Sharma, who slammed 75 runs in 50 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes. The opening duo put on a stand of 89 runs in 12.1 overs.
After they were dismissed, Rahul Tripathi brought a swift end to the match by making 39* in 15 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes, as SRH won the game by 8 wickets in hand in 17.4 overs. This meant that they put on first points on the IPL 2022 table, while CSK lost their first four games in the ongoing tournament.
After the match, Kane Williamson had some wise words to say about the win: “Every game you play is tough. We want to keep on improving. Although it’s our first win, we had to look on some of the things we’d done right in the previous game.
“Staying calm and staying on task. For us it’s focusing on our cricket and play smart. We are starting to see games played on surface once, twice. The target was competitive on that definitely.
“The ball held on the surface. We were able to build partnership and Abhishek was terrific. Learning from the first innings and taking it into our chase. The game always challenges you, everybody is trying to make contributions to the team.”
SRH will next face Gujarat Titans on April 11, while CSK will take on RCB on April 12.
