Former England captain Michael Vaughan pointed out the tense situation in the Gujarat Titans dugout during their game against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. Gujarat Titans pulled off a spectacular heist as they rode on South African batter David Miller’s remarkable unbeaten 94 off 51 balls.

Miller stitched 70 runs with stand-in skipper Rashid Khan, who blazed 40 runs in 21 balls to bridge the gap in their chase. Rashid walked in to bat when Gujarat Titans, sans regular skipper Hardik Pandya, were reeling at 87 for five. Out of those 87, Miller delivered 52 runs and he didn’t stop after joining forces with Rashid.

The South African smashed couple of fours off Chris Jordan before dispatching Dwayne Bravo’s attempted wide yorker for a six-over cover. Miller didn’t spare CSK’s best bowler of the game – Maheesh Theekshana – pulled him away over the deep backward square leg for a big hit.

Rashid clobbered three sixes and a four in Jordan’s 18th over to bring down the equation to 23 in the last two overs. Bravo picked successive wickets of Rashid and Alzarri Joseph to keep CSK alive in the game. But Miller accomplished the task of taking the Titans past the finishing line with a six and a four off Jordan before plundering two runs to complete a marvelous victory.

I was chuckling at Hardik Pandya on the sidelines: Gary Kirsten

Vaughan noted at the look of the Titans dugout in the final overs, where Hardik, who was rested due to stiffness in his groin, was in constant conversation with batting coach Gary Kirsten. Vaughan also appreciated Gujarat Titans’ daunting efforts to win without Hardik in the team.

“I was chuckling at Hardik Pandya on the sidelines. He was in Gary Kirsten’s ear every single time. He was like a parrot on his shoulders. He was bringing lots of energy from the sidelines… and that’s a really big win for the Titans,” Vaughan told Cricbuzz.

“To do it without Hardik and the fact that Shubman Gill didn’t contribute at all, that’s a big win. And if they can get David Miller to play in that fashion, you put Hardik next to him as a right-hander and they can be a real threat in this year’s IPL. They have had a great start. Still, a long way to go but they have got kinds so early days of reign… it’s a really good start from the Titans,” he added.

Gujarat Titans are currently placed on top of the points table with five wins in six matches of IPL 2022. They will face Kolkata Knight Riders in their next game on April 23 at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
