IPL 2022: BCCI To Gain Over 45000 Crores Through New IPL Media Rights: Reports

The new media rights tender for the 2023-2027 cycle will hit the market on March 28. The BCCI will arrange an e-auction for the new bidders and the result will be announced after the upcoming IPL 2022 season. A final go-ahead to float the tender was given by the IPL Governing Council in a meeting here on Friday.

There will be no consolidated rights category in the current tender. The BCCI will invite bids across four separate packages—digital, TV, the rest of the world and a new non-exclusive bundle of 18 matches as per the advice from KPMG, the consultants of the current tender. “The idea is to spread opportunities to different interested media companies and maximise revenue for the board,” a BCCI official said.

The expansion of the IPL from 60 to 74 matches after the admission of two new teams into the IPL fold. The BCCI is expecting huge margins of profit from its marquee competition this year. The collective base price from various categories itself has been estimated at ₹35,000 crores. However, as per the board’s internal estimates, the separate packaging could see the rights value get past ₹45,000 crores.

Currently, Disney Plus Hostar is the only Live Streaming Platform of the IPL in India. Other than Disney Star, Zee-Sony and Reliance (Viacom 18) is expected to bid for the TV rights. BCCI Is expecting aggressive bidding for the digital space with the likes of Amazon Prime, Meta, YouTube to fight for the rights.

Meanwhile. the IPL 2022 season kicks off with CSK and KKR playing the first match of the season It is a rematch of the IPL 2021 final with Kolkata having an opportunity to turn the tables on CSK. In 19 matches so far, CSK has won 12 while KKR just seven.

A total of 74 matches will be played across four venues in Maharashtra namely, Wankhede Stadium, Dy Patil Stadium, Brabourne Stadium and Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium. Wankhede and DY Patil Stadium will host 20 matches each while the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai and MCA Stadium in Pune will play hosts to 15 games each.
