Rajasthan Royals fast bowling coach Lasith Malinga appreciated youngster Riyan Parag for his exceptional fielding efforts throughout IPL 2022.

The 20-year-old amassed 168 runs in 13 innings, striking at 143.59, with the best score of 56 against RCB. Parag has been impressive on the field having taken 16 catches, the most by any fielder this season with SRH skipper Kane Williamson on the second spot with 10.

Riyan Parag needs five catches to break AB de Villiers’ record

The Assam all-rounder broke Ravindra Jadeja’s record of 13 catches in a single edition of IPL. Jadeja achieved the feat twice in 2013 & 2021 for Chennai Super Kings. Only former Royal Challengers Bangalore player AB de Villiers has grabbed more catches (19) than anyone else.

Parag could surpass this tally if he manages to pouch five caught dismissals in the final match against Gujarat Titans.

Riyan Parag has so much energy on the field: Lasith Malinga

Malinga said he enjoyed watching Parag’s athleticism on the field and was in awe with the youngster’s exuberance.

“I have really been enjoying Riyan’s fielding in the last 15 matches. He has so much energy, he is so athletic. He is always in the game,” Malinga said in a video uploaded on Rajasthan Royals’ official Instagram handle.

“We all know he didn’t get too many opportunities to bat. But the energy he brings with his game on the field is amazing. I don’t think you can see it in any other team. I am so happy with the energy and attitude that he brings to the team. This is the attitude we need,” he added.

Parag has also faced some criticism over his animated celebrations after completing catches. Matthew Hayden was unhappy with Parag’s celebration after taking Marcus Stoinis’ catch.

Parag gestured that he took the catch just before the ball could lend on the turf but that wasn’t the case.
