Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma expressed surprise at Mumbai Indians’ (MI) decision to let Kiwi pacer, Trent Boult go ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auctions. He was picked up by Rajasthan Royals (RR) for INR 8 crores while MI opted to go for the injured Jofra Archer.

The four players that MI retained were Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kieron Pollard. While they had to make the tough call, Rajkumar believes that letting Boult go wasn’t the right thing to do.

MI will miss Trent Boult for sure and they miscalculated. Boult and Jasprit Bumrah have won them so many games. I really don’t know how they let him go. To make up for Boult’s absence, they went for Unadkat, who has done well for Saurashtra recently.”

He has proved to be expensive, but because of his experience, there are always hopes that he can deliver. The two other left-armers have been picked as a backup it seems,” Rajkumar said in the Khelneeti podcast.

Since Hardik Pandya was also allowed to leave, the MI batting order suddenly feels weak. They did manage to bring back Ishan Kishan for a whopping INR 15.25 crores but they still lack sturdiness in the middle-order. All of the responsibility now lies on the Caribbean all-rounder, Kieron Pollard.

In T20 cricket, you don’t need more than 4-5 batters. Then you can have all-rounders. If your top 4-5 batters can’t play 20 overs, then what is the point?

“But yes, MI are weak in the all-rounders’ department this time and Kieron Pollard will have a big role to play as he is the only experienced impact player in the middle-order,” he further added.

As many as 55 matches will be played in Mumbai and MI will have the support of the crowd throughout. The first match will be played on March 26 between CSK and KKR.
