IPL 2022: If Devon Conway Doesn't Play And Robin Uthappa Opens, CSK Will Get A Chance To Play Maheesh Theekshana – Irfan Pathan On Replacement Of Faf du Plessis

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has picked potential replacements for veteran Proteas batsman Faf du Plessis at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were able to retain Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali, and Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction and they were forced to release the likes of Robin Uthappa, Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu and Dwayne Bravo.

Although they bought back a few core players, they failed to bring back Du Plessis and he was bought by RCB and he will be leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League 2022.

Speaking on Star Sports show ‘Game Plan’, Irfan named New Zealand’s Devon Conway and veteran Indian opener Robin Uthappa as Du Plessis’ replacements at the top-order.

“They have two options. Of course New Zealand opener Devon Conway is there. That gives you a little comfort as well. The pitches in Maharashtra, at Wankhede and CCI, are good pitches, the ones you play in overseas Conway looks very comfortable in that. But if you don’t play Conway then you go with Robin Uthappa. He has been a fantastic opener as well,” he said. 

If Conway doesn’t play then Mahesh Theekshana, the mystery spinner will come into play – Irfan Pathan

The World Cup-winning all-rounder added that the Chennai Super Kings could play mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana if they opt to go with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa as openers.

“If Conway doesn’t play and Uthappa opens then you will get a chance to play Maheesh Theekshana from the start. Obviously, you need to play other overseas guys like Adam Milne because you need that extra pace in Maharashtra pitches.

“You have Bravo, you are going to play Moeen Ali. So all four slots will be filled. But if Conway doesn’t play then Mahesh Theekshana, the mystery spinner, will come into play,” he explained. 

The defending champions Chennai Super Kings will begin their title defence in the Indian Premier League 2022 with the battle against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 at the Wankhede Stadium.
