Former South Africa skipper Shaun Pollock reckoned that Dinesh Karthik could create a serious headache for the Indian team management in terms of selection.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) wicketkeeper-batter has scored 90 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 204.55 and has remained in IPL 2022 so far.

IPL 2022: Dinesh Karthik scored 23-ball 44 vs RR

In the match against Rajasthan Royals, Karthik smashed 44 off 23 balls, including seven fours and a six. He hit 19 runs to Tamil Nadu teammate Ravichandran Ashwin in the 14th over. Karthik hit successive boundaries off Prasidh Krishna’s bowling in the penultimate over to give the finishing touches to his side. RCB chased 170 with five balls and four wickets in hand.

The 36-year-old played his last international game in India’s semi-final exit at the hands of New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup in Manchester. Rishabh Pant is India’s first-choice player to don the gloves behind the stumps and Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and KL Rahul are the backup options available for the Indian team in the required role.

If Dinesh Karthik performs like this, he will definitely have his name ahead: Shaun Pollock

Pollock, who played 423 international matches for South Africa in his career, said if Karthik continues to display his power-hitting spree then he could push his case forward in the Indian on the basis of a stellar IPL season with RCB.

“Yeah, the way he is playing now if this form continues, it is a headache for people at the backend. The only issue he has got is that Rishabh Pant will be the man with the gloves. If his batting is good enough, you never know. Just give him the role and use him on the field,” Pollock told Cricbuzz.

“But I don’t think even he would want to discuss this at this stage. He would focus on each game, making sure he does his best. But if he performs like this, form wise, he will definitely have his name ahead,” he added.

RCB will play against Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2022 fixture on April 9 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
