Former Indian pacer Munaf Patel has said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) needs to take “good care” of the express pacer Umran Malik and then only he can last longer in cricket.

Umran Malik has been one of the most talked-about names in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer, who was one of the three retentions made by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 auction, has impressed everyone with his raw pace and he possesses the ability to bowl 150+ kph deliveries consistently.

Meanwhile, Munaf Patel said that there is excitement around Umran because he has come up from a small place.

“When I first came on to the scene, social media wasn’t as big as it is now but there was certainly excitement around. It is a natural reaction if somebody comes up from a small place where there is no infrastructure.

“Umran has come up the same way I did. You need to take good care of him. He will last long only if the BCCI does that,” Munaf told The Indian Express.

Munaf added that the bowlers like himself, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, VRV Singh and Ishant Sharma burst onto the scene with deliveries touching the 145+ kph mark but the speed of bowlers goes down if they are not managed properly.

If you see, Zaheer Khan had also arrived as a 145-plus bowler, Ashish Nehra was there, I was there, VRV Singh was there, Ishant Sharma was also quick when he came in.

“At present, you have guys like Umesh Yadav and Navdeep Saini. There needs to be a system in place where there is a restriction on the number of matches a fast bowler plays in a year.”

Former Indian pacer further said that the BCCI will have to take care of Umran because if he is used too much then there will be a possibility of him suffering a big injury which will hamper his speed.

“Now, of course, technology has advanced in terms of physiotherapy and training, but still you will have to take care of him.

“If you use him too much, then chances are he will suffer a big injury and that means he will then have to start cutting down on his pace. But right now, he is bowling like soney pe suhaaga,” Munaf further added.

Meanwhile, the SRH pacer recently bagged a 5-wicket haul against Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League 2022. So far he has picked 15 wickets in 8 games and is the third-highest wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League 2022.
