IPL is a lucrative tournament where not just players participate for massive financial gains but many including the coaching and non-coaching staff also make a part of it.
To run a franchise smoothly and ensure its functioning takes place on a regular basis, an effective coaching staff with the best brains is needed.
A strong coaching unit will not just train the players but groom the raw talent into excellence and bring the best outcome from the team.
Most of the franchises will continue with their coaching setup for the next season with a few minor changes. Let us look at the ratings of each team based on its coaching staff.
IPL 2022: Rating The Franchises On The Basis Of Their Coaching And Support Staff
Sunrisers Hyderabad (7/10)
Sunrisers Hyderabad have undergone many changes in their coaching department for IPL 2022 after Trevor Bayliss stepped down from the head coach’s role.
Tom Moody, who was the head coach of the franchise between 2013-2019, was brought back in the same role after serving as the Director of Cricket for the team in IPL 2021.
The team has roped in West Indies batting great Brian Lara as a strategic advisor and batting coach while former South African pacer Dale Steyn was named as pace bowling coach.
Simon Katich, who served as the head coach of RCB, will be Tom Moody’s assistant coach and Hemang Badani will have dual roles of fielding coach and scouting talent.
Sri Lanka’s legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan was retained as the spin bowling coach of SRH.
SRH would need a great amount of resilience to come back stronger after an abysmal season in IPL 2021.

Rajasthan Royals (5/10)
Royals parted ways with Australia’s Andrew McDonald ahead of IPL 2021. Former Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara, who was appointed as the Director of Cricket, has been the face of the team management.
Kumar Sangakkara is responsible for overseeing the entire cricketing ecosystem of the franchise including coaching structure, auction plans and team strategy, talent discovery and development, as well as the development of the Royals Academy in Nagpur.
Zimbabwe’s Trevor Penney is currently the lead assistant coach of the franchise with Sairaj Bahutule as their spin bowling coach and Dishant Yagnik as fielding coach.
Amol Muzumdar was the batting coach until 2020 and still continues to be part of the coaching unit as an out-of-season High-Performance Batting coach to back the squad and the RR academies. Australia’s Rob Cassell is the fast bowling coach of the team.
In recent years, the Royals have been one of the underperforming sides of IPL and for them, this mega auction is a must to restructure their entire squad.

Kolkata Knight Riders (7/10)
Kolkata Knight Riders are being coached by one of their best players of all time, the former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum, who has the services of Abhishek Nayar (assistant coach), Kyle Mills (bowling coach), David Hussey (mentor) and Omkar Salvi (assistant bowling coach).
The coaching group of KKR backed the team players after a poor start to IPL 2021 where they just won two games of seven matches but bounced back in the second leg to reach the final.
McCullum & co will definitely have to think meticulously for the auction strategy and opt for their players wisely with an apt candidate for the captaincy role.

Punjab Kings (6/10)
Punjab Kings were the only side to have an Indian head coach until RCB appointed Sanjay Bangar for IPL 2022. Anil Kumble has been working with a side that has tried six captains since Adam Gilchrist retired from the tournament in 2013.
The team has experienced coaches like Wasim Jaffer (batting coach) and Jonty Rhodes (fielding coach).
Avinash Vaidya, Jonty Rhodes, Damien Wright, Ashish Tuli, Andrew Leipus Adrian Le Roux and Naresh Kumar are also part of Punjab Kings’ coaching staff.
Punjab have been the most unfortunate side as they always have a good team on paper before the start of the tournament and their spirit is also high but they cannot push the results in their favour.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (6/10)
RCB has appointed Sanjay Bangar as their new head coach for the IPL 2022 season. Before Bangar, New Zealand’s Mike Hesson was seeing the role apart from being the Director of Cricket Operations of the team.
Simon Katich was the head coach of the team but stepped down from the role before the second phase of IPL 2021 due to personal reasons. Katich will join SRH as their new assistant coach from next season onwards.
RCB have tried various coaches in the past few years but haven’t been able to lift their elusive IPL title since the emergence of the cash-rich league.
Malolan Rangarajan is the scouting talent in the team with Adam Griffith as the bowling coach and Sridharan Sriram as the spin bowling coach of the team.
Bangar will have a lot of expectations from the RCB fans to build a strong team that fulfils their long-standing wish to win the IPL trophy.

Chennai Super Kings (9/10)
Former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming played for Chennai Super Kings and made 196 runs in the inaugural IPL season in 2008.
He was named as the team’s head coach from the next season in 2009 and happens to be the longest-serving head coach in the IPL. Fleming is also the most successful coach of the tournament having won 4 IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018 & 2019.
If one observes the pattern of CSK roping their former players in the team’s coaching unit like they have done with Mike Hussey (batting coach) and Lakshmipathy Balaji (bowling coach) makes a suitable environment for someone who knows the players very well. Former South Africa all-rounder Eric Simons is the bowling consultant of the team.
Rajiv Kumar, Tommy Simsek
Gregory King, R Russell, Dr Madhu Thottappillil and Khalil Khan are the other members of the coaching staff.

Delhi Capitals (8/10)
Capitals are becoming a force to be reckoned in the IPL after performing consistently in the past three seasons and making the cut in the knockout stages.
The Capitals appointed Ricky Ponting as their head coach and since then they have seen massive changes in terms of structure and results of the squad.
Ponting is currently working with three assistant coaches in the name of Mohammad Kaif, Pravin Amre and Ajay Ratra. Apart from that, he also has James Hopes (bowling coach), Patrick Farhat (physiotherapist) , Dhananjaya Kaushik (assistant physio) in the team’s coaching group.
In recent years, Capitals believe in handing the leadership to young players and that is the reason why they have succeeded. The team has also retained young players like Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant along with Axar Patel and South Africa’s Anrich Nortje.

Mumbai Indians (9/10)
The Rohit Sharma-led side has won the IPL title five times and stand as the most successful franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League.
Mumbai Indians have the best players in the world like Rohit, West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard, ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah and remarkable batter Suryakumar Yadav.
But behind a successful team, there has to be a strong force working behind the curtains and bringing their personal experience of international cricket into the picture.
The Mumbai Indians team management is led by former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene who is the current head coach of the IPL franchise. Jayawardene joined the team in 2017 and has so far won three IPL titles with the team.
Jayawardene works closely with Sachin Tendulkar (icon), Zaheer Khan (Director of Cricket Operations), Shane Bond (bowling coach) and Robin Singh (batting coach).
