The IPL 2022 player retention got completed on Tuesday with all eight franchises announcing their list of retentions. The 8 IPL teams have retained as many as 27 players ahead of the big Mega Auction 2022. The franchises have spent a total of INR 269 crores for these 27 players. Notably, out of 27 players, 19 are Indians while 8 are overseas players.
The franchises have retained mostly the veteran players, the ones who have been a part of them for very long. However, the franchises also have to let go of some of the prominent names which they didn’t want to.
All those players who have been released will go back into the auction pool. Prior to the auction, the two new teams will also have a chance to buy three players each. It will be interesting to see which franchise ends up buying whom. In this article, we take a look at 5 released players who can become the costliest IPL Player.
IPL 2022 Retention: 5 Released Players Who Can Become The Costliest IPL Player
David Warner

Sunrisers Hyderabad announced their retention list, which includes Kane Williamson along with two uncapped Indian players. The biggest exclusion was David Warner, though it was on the expected lines. David Warner would no longer play for Sunrisers Hyderabad from next season.
Under his leadership, Hyderabad won a title in 2016. But Warner will find himself back in the auction pool ahead of the mega auctions or either one of the two new franchises could buy his services. Either way, he can become the costlier player in the history of the Indian Premier League. Warner is one of the most destructive batsmen in the current era of the game and one could witness a bidding war for him in the auctions next year.
KL Rahul

Punjab Kings wanted to retain KL Rahul as the captain for next year as well, however, the Indian opener wasn’t interested to continue playing for the franchise. As a result, Punjab Kings had to release him and thus they will be playing with a new captain next year. There are talks that KL Rahul might lead the Lucknow franchise in IPL 2022.
Perhaps, all the franchises will be having an eye on him and would be desperate to buy his services. Given the kind of form he is right now coupled with his leadership skills, he could become the most expensive player in IPL history.
Rashid Khan

Sunrisers Hyderabad wanted to retain Rashid Khan but things couldn’t turn out as expected. Rashid Khan wanted to express his desire to be the first retention but the franchise seemed to be adamant in giving Kane Williamson the 15 crore contract and keeping Rashid as the second retention for 11 crores.
As it turns out, the franchise released him and Rashid Khan could play for a different franchise new year. There is no denying the fact that Rashid Khan is currently one of the best bowlers in the world. Not a lot of batsmen have the ability to play him with ease. Besides, he is a gun fielder and can hit the big shots in the slog overs.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise if Rashid Khan makes a massive deal and becomes the most expensive player in the history of IPL.
Ishan Kishan

Prior to the announcement of the retention list, there were reports that Mumbai Indians would retain Ishan Kishan for next year. However, as it turns out, Suryakumar Yadav got the nod ahead of him which means that Ishan Kishan could find himself in the Mega Auctions 2022.
Ishan Kishan is a destructive opening batsman. He has been making waves for the last few years with his destructive power-hitting. His batting exploits for MI also helped him find a place in India’s squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup. Franchises will surely be eying on him and won’t hesitate in splurging huge amount of money on him.
Trent Boult

Mumbai Indians won’t be too happy after releasing Trent Boult. Mumbai Indians traded Trent Boult from Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2020 edition of the tournament. Trent Boult was the third-highest wicket-taker in IPL 2020. He has been outstanding for the franchise for the last couple of years.
Boult can fetch wickets in the powerplay with his ability to swing the ball both ways. Also, there’s no denying that he has improved his death-over bowling a lot in the last couple of years. Boult could play for a new franchise next year and there could be a chance that he might end becoming the costliest player in the history of IPL.
