IPL 2022 auction saw some terrific signings in the two-day event that had some interruptions after the regular auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsed on the first day due to Postural Hypotension.

A total of 204 players were sold in the span of two days aggregating a sum of 551.7 crores as 10 teams were left with content to build up a formidable squad.

The Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter was the most expensive purchase in the high-profile event. Deepak Chahar was second on the list after CSK bought him for 14 crores.

Each team might have strenuously thought about piling up their best combination with back-ups to each role.

Let us look at some of the smartest picks amongst the 10 IPL franchise teams in the IPL 2022 auction.

IPL Auction 2022: 5 Smartest Buys In The Mega Auction

5) Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders)

The Mumbai batter went to Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping amount of INR 12.25 crores after the two-time IPL champions outsmarted Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans in purchasing Iyer.

Iyer is the reason behind Delhi Capitals resurgence after he took over the captaincy duties from Gautam Gambhir in IPL 2018.

In IPL 2019, the Delhi franchise qualified for the playoffs after a hiatus of seven years and the next year they made their maiden appearance in a final, where they lost to Mumbai Indians.

Iyer can not only give any team the option of a middle-order batter but also could become a potential candidate for the leadership role. After KKR released both Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik ahead of the auction, Iyer can fill the shoes of a leader of their side.

This will be Iyer’s second franchise after he played for the Delhi outfit for seven seasons, he missed the first leg of IPL 2021 owing to a shoulder injury. With 2375 runs from 87 matches, Iyer is Delhi Capitals third most run-scorer after Virender Sehwag (2382) and Rishabh Pant (2498).

4) Dewald Brevis (Mumbai Indians)

The South African prodigious batter has allured fame for his intensity to score runs while tempting to play unorthodox shots just like former Proteas skipper AB de Villiers.

The 18-year-old Johannesburg-born player has earned the nickname of ‘Baby AB de Villiers’ for his fearless approach while batting. Dewald was the highest run-getter in the ICC U19 World Cup, scoring 506 runs from six innings, including two hundreds and three half-centuries.

The youngster had registered for IPL 2022 auction and he sought interests from Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings in the early bidding war between them before Mumbai Indians changed the tables as they bought him for INR 3 crore.

Mumbai Indians are very well known for giving opportunities to youngsters and grooming them for a longer period. This is a great investment by the franchise as they look towards their future as well.

3) Kagiso Rabada (Punjab Kings)

The 26-year-old speedster was sharing the new ball with his South African teammate Anrich Nortje at Delhi Capitals and terrorising the opponents.

Rabada has picked 76 wickets from 50 IPL matches since he joined the Delhi outfit in 2017.

Punjab Kings purchased the Proteas pacer for INR 9.25 crore as they won their bidding battle against the Capitals and Gujarat Titans.

Rabada can resolve Punjab’s bowling woes, an area that the team has been struggling since the last few seasons even after having the ranks of Sheldon Cottrell, Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith in their squad.

2) Mitchell Marsh (Delhi Capitals)

The Western Australia player had a fantastic run with the bat in the shortest format last year. Marsh accumulated 627 runs from 20 innings in 2020.

He was unbeaten on 77 from 50 balls at an impressive strike rate of 154 against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup final as Australia romped to a seven-wicket win.

Because of his series of injuries, Marsh couldn’t play for Sunrisers Hyderabad as he was ruled out of IPL 2021 season.

After Delhi Capitals couldn’t chase their former captain Shreyas Iyer in the bidding war, they could use Marsh for the same role in the middle-order. The Australian was sold for INR 6.5 crores.

1) Harshal Patel (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

The Haryana pacer had a tremendous IPL 2021 season as he ended as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 32 wickets, equalising CSK all-rounder Dwayne Bravo’s record in IPL 2013.

Patel changed the franchise’s fortunes of winning matches on the league stage as they were extremely lacking in death bowling.

It was inevitable that RCB would’ve for his services by picking him in the auction and they left no stone unturned to bring him back to the squad.

RCB managed to seal the deal for Harshal at INR 10.75 crores after being in contention with Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings during his bid.
