Shreyas Iyer was roped in by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the mega auction for 12.25 crores. They won a fierce bidding battle with RCB and bagged him at a hefty price. Despite the presence of Pat Cummins in the squad, the management named him as the skipper of the side ahead of IPL 2022.
So far in the first two games, Shreyas Iyer has led KKR brilliantly. He hit the winning shot against CSK in the second game made life difficult for Banglore to get to 129 in the second game. In both games, his astute captaincy came to the fore as he managed his bowling attack pretty well. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan also liked the look of Shreyas Iyer in the two games so far. Talking to Star Sports’ Cricket Live, Irfan said that the future of KKR s bring under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy.
“His captaincy moves are coming to the fore prominently in this season and we will talk more about it as the tournament progresses. He’s a players’ captain.
“He backs the players at every turn and which is a good sign of a leader. The future of Kolkata is bright under his supervision and we’ve seen glimpses of it in the first couple of games,” said Pathan.
The former Indian all-rounder concluded by saying that Iyer’s captaincy skills developed after he led Delhi capitals in 2018. Pathan also believed that his association with Ricky Ponting at Delhi Capitals helped him grow as a captain as well.
Shreyas Iyer Started Well Under Ricky Ponting’s Supervision: Irfan Pathan
“Shreyas Iyer is a brilliant captain. Remember, he picked up (Delhi Capitals) captaincy midway through the season, like Rohit Sharma who was named Mumbai Indians’ captain halfway through the season in IPL 2013.
“For Delhi Capitals, Shreyas started well under the supervision of coach Ricky Ponting and he kept improving his decision-making skills in his first stint as captain,” Pathan concluded saying.
KKR face Punjab Kings in their third game of the IPL 2022 campaign at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on April 1. They would like to come back to winning ways after losing to RCB in their previous game.
